Age UK works in partnership with our sister organisation HelpAge International to run the country's only international sponsorship programme for older people. We ensure older people's basic needs are met in some of the poorest countries in the world.
More than one in ten of the poorest people in the world are over 60. For just 50p a day you can make a real difference to the 49,000 vulnerable older people benefiting from our Sponsor a grandparent programme.
Pequenita is aged 89 and lives in Mozambique in southern Africa. Her husband died in 1995 and she has lost two of her eight children. Her son, his wife and their seven children now live with her. She walks two hours a day to collect water and it is a day’s walk to the nearest health clinic.
The Sponsor a Grandparent programme provides Pequenita with invaluable support.
‘I now have a blanket to keep me warm and a mosquito net to protect me from malaria. The project provided the land and the seeds for the fields I work in. I also have a cow, which may have a calf one day. Then I will be able to sell one and buy clothes, food and another blanket.
‘I hope to receive a house in the future and maybe one day we will even have a water pump nearby. I would suffer a great deal if it were not for the project.’
