The new force combining &
International work is a core pillar of the work of Age UK. We have a vision of a world in which older people flourish and a mission to improve the lives of older people, not just in the UK, but all around the world.
Age UK was formed out of two organisations, Help the Aged and Age Concern, both of which had been involved in international work for many years. Age UK has inherited this work and developed it further. We support older people to lead more fulfilling lives in over 40 developing countries, primarily through our sister organisation HelpAge International.
We also work in partnership with ageing organisations across the world to stengthen the global age sector, and advocate for change at an EU and global level to create laws and processes that support the rights of older people.
Older people across the globe are particularly at risk from poverty, ill health and the effects of emergencies. People in later life often suffer disrimination and violation of their rights. However, older people are also a major force for change. They have wisdom, experience and a quiet strength drawn from a life lived, mistakes made and lessons learnt.
Age UK has a wealth of expertise in areas such as research and evidence, influencing and service provision, trading and social enterprise. We are able to use this knowledge to support the development of ageing organisations in developing and developed countries. We will also draw on models and experience from other countries to help shape our work in the UK.
We believe that by working with other ageing organisations, we will have a more powerful voice internationally to change the way ageing is addressed globally. We also have an important role to play in working with local organisations. By helping them to build their capacity and by sharing good practice from Age UK and our local partners in the UK, we will enable them to build knowledge and transfer skills.
