Turn old mobiles into cash to help local older people

10 October 2014

You can help raise much needed funds for Age UK Blackburn with Darwen by recycling those old, unwanted mobile phones languishing at the back of a drawer.

Working with mobile phone recycling partner Greener Solutions we hope to tap into the vast mobile phone replacement market, benefit the environment and importantly help support our work with older people.

The statistics are staggering:

  • Over 20 million handsets will be upgraded in the UK this year alone
  • Estimates put the number of redundant mobiles kept in cupboards and drawers at anything between 50 and 80 million
  • Only 10% of old mobiles are currently recycled

New waste disposal regulations make it illegal to mix electronic equipment such as mobiles with general waste going to landfill sites, which means you shouldn’t just throw them in the bin.

So please recycle your old mobiles and protect the environment and help local older people. Phones that can be re-used provide affordable first time communications for developing countries, others will have parts and materials recycled into new phones with unsalvageable parts safely disposed of.

For every phone collected, Age UK receives £3 regardless of its condition. These donations have already helped us raise an additional £138 towards local services for older people.

Call Age UK Blackburn with Darwen on 01254 266620 or email us at enquiries@ageukbwd.org.uk to request free post envelopes to send your old mobiles in. You can also call into our offices at 4 King Street or our Darwen Shop at 3 Market Street, or our office in Darwen Town Hall.
