Community Home Day Care

A local answer to rural isolation.

Introduction

Community Home Day CareCommunity Home Day Care is seen as a model of good practice nationally. The project came into being following research into the needs of older people in the region. An innovative response to the needs of isolated older people, it has proved extremely successful and popular.

The scheme involves a volunteer Day Care Host opening up their home once a week or fortnight to 3 or 4 local older people. Transport is provided to the host's home. Guests can enjoy a nutritious hot midday meal, and stimulating activities in a friendly, caring atmosphere.

The Benefits of the scheme

This service promotes health by preventing loneliness and social isolation. Our guests and their families have told us that their day with the hosts gives them a feeling of being cared about and many have said that they are made to feel part of the family for the day. The scheme also provides an opportunity to be listened to and of being a valued member of a group of friends. For those being cared for at home this gives their carer a much needed break.

As one guest commented, 'our host does a grand job. I would never miss her Day Care day. It's great to leave these four walls sometimes - especially if you live on your own'.

How do I become a guest?

You can contact us yourself or you can be referred to the scheme by Social Services, your GP, nurse or other health professional, family or friends. You will then be visited in your home by the Day Care Services Manager or another member of staff.

Transport will be provided to and from the host's home and you will be asked to contribute £6 - paid directly to the host. The scheme is subsidised by us.

Can you help?

We are always pleased to hear from anyone who might be interested in becoming a host. Our hosts all say that they find their role enjoyable and rewarding. If you are interested and would like to know more about what this involves then visit our volunteering page.
