Advocacy service

Manandwomansittinginconservatory

What is Advocacy?

Advocacy is representing someone or helping them to present

their own views, usually to defend their rights to promote their interests. Our persons project is an independent service funded

by The Big Lottery.

Why Advocacy?

We work to enhance communications between the older person and the service providers.

  • Allow someone to take time with the person giving the individual opportunity to express their opinion
  • Reduce the person’s anxiety throughout any decision making.

What is the cost?

Nothing … there is no charge for using this service.

How does it work?

Advocacy works…..

  • By offering support to the older person
  • By having time to listen to the views and concerns of the person
  • By encouraging the individual to speak up for themselves where possible
  • By supporting the person in meetings
  • By assisting the person to communicate their views to the staff who are working with them
  • By speaking on the person’s behalf

Who is the service for?

This service is for older people living in Gwynedd or Anglesey.

Can the service provider be the advocate?

Not always! Most people who work in the agencies providing the health or social care services do their best to safeguard and support people. However, generally it is the case that they have to manage limited resource while maintaining a professional role. This can result in conflict of interests and sometimes it is hard for them to be critical of the services that they provide.
