Get in 'The Swim'

Swimming is a great way to create a healthy body and mind, so make sure you take advantage of free swimming for over 60s.

 Top 10 swimming ideas:

  1. Since the launch of the Welsh Assembly Government's Free Swimming for Over 60s in 2004, over a million free swims have been taken, with 20 per cent of those people involved taking a dip for the first time.
  2. Swimming is one of the most popular activities among the 55 plus age group, with more women on average going swimming than men.
  3. Swimming participation is highest in Gwynedd, Cardiff, Ceredigion and the Vale of Glamorgan.
  4. There are approximately 140 local authority swimming pools in Wales.
  5. Swimming is a low-impact sport and one of the best for not putting stress on the joints or connective tissues.
  6. Swimming regularly can help reduce and possibly prevent high blood pressure, lowering you risk of heart disease or strokes. However if you suffer from any of these conditions, we recommend seeing a doctor before taking up swimming.
  7. Swimming improves cardiovascular conditioning, muscle strength, endurance, posture and flexibility.
  8. Swimming is relaxing as it allows more oxygen to flow to your muscles and forces you to regulate your breathing.
  9. When you swim breaststroke or backstroke, you're burning about the same amount of calories as a fast walk or slow jog.
  10. Becoming a regular swimmer at a local leisure centre increases the chances of you striking up friendships with fellow swimmers.
