2012 European Year for Active Ageing

Age Cymru is supporting 'European Year for Active Ageing  and Solidarity between Generations' in 2012.

This is a chance to reflect on how Europeans are living longer and staying healthier than ever before and to make the most of the opportunities that this represents.

Age Cymru physical activity events in 2012:

Nordic Walking taster session, Sunday 24th June 09:45 - 15:30
Nordic Walking taster session, Saturday 18th August 09:45 - 15:30
Learn the basic Nordic Walking technique with Age Cymru's International Nordic Walking instructors at the Mountain Centre in Libanus.
Booking is essential for these two events and you will receive two hours training, then after time for lunch you can practise your Nordic Walking.
Bring a packed lunch or you can visit the tearooms.
Wear your normal walking gear and all specialist equipment will be provided by Age Cymru's International Nordic Walking instructors.
Walks and instruction are graded to the ages and fitness levels of participants but we have found that people over 50 particularly benefit.
Cost £3 per person or £5 for 2 people and parking charges will apply.
For further details and to book call 029 2043 1555 or email nordicwalking@agecymru.org.uk
We'll be updating this page regularly with more events - remember to check back soon.

Objectives for the year

  • To raise awareness of the value of active ageing and to highlight the useful contribution that older people make to society and the economy; leading to better opportunities for older people to play their part in the labour market.
  • To promote solidarity between generations and the vitality and dignity of all people; combating poverty and social exclusion.
  • To do more to mobilise the potential of older persons by fostering volunteering and active participation in family life and society; and encouraging healthy ageing in dignity.
  • To promote activities which will help to combat age discrimination, to overcome age-related stereotypes and to remove barriers, particularly with regard to employability.

Active ageing can give the baby-boom generation and tomorrow's older adults the opportunity to:
  • stay in the workforce and share their experience
  • keep playing an active role in society
  • live as healthily and fulfilling lives as possible

It's also key to meaning solidarity between generations in societies with rapidly increasing numbers of older people.
