Most people with medical conditions take a range of prescription medications over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and/or herbal supplements.

Knowing how to take your medication properly is really important to ensure that it is working effectively to manage your condition and to prevent any serious side effects.

Also, around £50 million worth of medications are prescribed in Wales per year but are never taken.

Your doctors, nurses and pharmacists work hard to keep you healthy, and you also have an important role to play in maintaining your health.

How to take your medications safely and effectively

  1. Find out about your conditions/ illnesses and make sure you know which medication you are taking to treat each one.
  2. All medication should come with a leaflet that explains how to take them properly-read this thoroughly.
  3. Your medication is individual to you; never take someone else’s - it may interfere with your other medication or you may be allergic to it.
  4. Ask your pharmacist before you buy any other medication or herbal remedies as they may affect the way other medication works.
  5. Medications must be disposed of safely at your local pharmacist.
