HandyVan is a national programme that improves quality of life and provides peace of mind to older people by making their homes more safe and secure.

It helps people maintain their independence and continue living safely in their own home.

Our fleet of 30 HandyVans are based across the UK and deliver a free service to those who meet these criteria:

  • Applicants must be 60 or over
  • Their savings or assets (not including their home) do not exceed £20,000
  • HandyVans operate in their area

The HandyVan scheme provides four key services:

Security: We fit door and window locks, door chains and mirrors, spy holes, patio door anti-lifting devices and door bars.

Safety: As well as fitting smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and new light bulbs, our teams provide fall prevention evaluations.

They give advice and do essential repairs, such as tacking down loose carpets and re-routing trailing electricity cables, to make homes safer.

Small repairs: We’ll help with any small jobs such as securing loose cupboard doors, repairing internal doors, installing shelves and curtain rails etc etc!

Please note that materials are chargeable for the small repairs service.

Aids and adaptations: Our team will fit hand/grab rails and stair banisters.

Our HandyVans secure an average of 90 homes every day.  To apply for the service or to make a referral please contact the team on 0845 026 1055 or email handyvan@ageuk.co.uk.
