£4.5 million dementia investment welcomed

Published on 05 June 2015 09:30 AM

Age Cymru has welcomed today's Welsh Government announcement of £4.5 million to support people with dementia.

Graeme Francis, our Head of Policy says:

"Age Cymru welcomes this new investment in the support available for people with dementia.

"Due to our ageing population and improvements in diagnosis, we know that the instance of dementia is rising across Wales.

"Unfortunately the NHS still often appears inadequately prepared to properly support people experiencing dementia and their carers.

"Recent revelations around the poor treatment of patients on the Tawel Fan ward at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd have demonstrated just how badly things can go wrong.

"Investment in psychological therapies is also extremely important as we are aware of situations where older people in need of mental health services are not able to access services, or are simply prescribed medications inappropriately.

"Wales still has a long way to go until everyone with dementia is supported appropriately, but this funding is a positive step in the right direction."
