Alzheimer's gene discovery

Published on 04 April 2011 09:30 AM

Age Cymru has today welcomed news of a breakthrough in the research into causes of Alzheimer's disease with the discovery five genes that increase the risk of developing the condition.

Victoria Lloyd, the charity's Director of Influencing and Programme Development says:

"With an estimated 37,000 people in Wales currently living with dementia, and that figure set to rise over the next 20 years to a level where 1 in 3 people are expected to develop some form of dementia, the case is clear as to why investment into the causes of dementia must be increased.

"Research into dementia and its causes has always been severely underfunded and Age Cymru hopes that the interest generated by today's announcement will impress upon the powers-that-be  the importance of a commitment to provide more money for research into the causes of  and treatments for dementia."
