Over-50s across Wales can learn to use technology such as the internet, mobile phones and digital cameras at a series of free taster sessions this week (19 to 25 September).
It’s all part of itea and biscuits week – an annual event run by Age Cymru to give older people a taste of the benefits that digital technology can offer them.
Age Cymru’s Healthy Ageing Manager, Claire Bottomley, says:
“Do you know your Skype from your Facebook, or your iPod from your Wii?
”If not, then you could be missing out on benefiting from and enjoying the life-enhancing opportunities that modern technology can offer.”
“We know that there are a range of barriers preventing older people experiencing the benefits that digital technology can offer.
“These include a lack of understanding of technology, a lack of confidence about using a sometimes baffling array of equipment choices, as well as people just not seeing how using their computers and the internet will benefit them in their lives.
Claire Bottomley concludes:
“itea and biscuits week is Age Cymru’s attempt to challenge these barriers and open up the world of digital technology to older people across Wales.
“This is why we are working with a range of partners to deliver 23 free and friendly digital technology sessions in 15 locations around the country between 19 and 25 September.”
Communities 2.0 is one of the organisations that is working with Age Cymru to deliver workshops during itea and biscuits week 2011.
Mark Smith, Public Engagement Officer from Communities 2.0 says:
“We are delighted to be supporting itea and biscuits week at a number of events around Wales.
“Communities 2.0 helps older people to make the most of the internet, in ways that complement their interests and support them with their everyday needs.
“I will be helping out at an event in Bridgend, with a local slimming club and older social housing tenants, providing advice on everything from healthy eating websites to sending text messages on their mobile phones.
“itea and biscuits week should be a lot of fun for everyone involved!”
There are itea and biscuits events taking place around Wales between 19 and 25 September.
