My Home Life Cymru conference

Published on 16 June 2011 08:00 AM

Improving quality of life for Welsh care home residents, their relatives and staff will be under discussion at an event in Swansea today.

‘Taking the journey of development in care homes' is a conference being run by the award-winning My Home Life Cymru programme from Age Cymru.

The event is being supported by Barchester Healthcare, and it will look at how people living in, visiting and working in care homes can work together to improve each others' quality of life.

My Home Life Cymru's John Moore says:

"Care and nursing homes are communities within communities that exist in villages, towns and cities right across Wales.

"The people who belong to these communities are the people who live, visit and work in them.

"If we can improve the quality of life for just one these groups of people - residents, relatives or staff, then the knock-on effect of this will be felt by everyone who is part of that community.

"But My Home Life Cymru wants to improve the lives of everyone involved in these communities.

"That's why we're looking today at how residents, relatives and staff can work together to achieve this aim."

The conference programme includes an address by Age Cymru's Chief Executive Robert Taylor OBE, and contributions from Lorraine Morgan, Chair of My Home Life Cymru and Professor Dame June Clark from the University of Wales Swansea.

Topics under discussion will include ‘Do care homes need to develop', ‘How can care homes lead the way in supporting older people?‘, and there will be an interactive performance from Theatr Fforwm Cymru entitled ‘Learning from our practice - can we make things better?‘.

Delegates will also be able to attend a series of workshops covering issues such as changing care homes' approach to dementia, developing nursing practices in care homes and accessing older people's views through creative writing.

John Moore concludes:

"Every day, the My Home Life Cymru programme is learning about and sharing new ideas and innovations to improve the quality of life for people involved in care and nursing homes.

"Today's conference continues this work and is our latest contribution towards improving the lives of people involved with care and nursing homes across Wales."
