Nordic Walking event on 24 June

Published on 07 June 2012 10:00 AM

South and Mid Wales's over 50s can have a taste of Nordic Walking later this month in the beautiful Brecon Beacons.

Age Cymru's Nordic Walking Programme is running a taster session at the Brecon Beacons National Park Visitor Centre - also known as the Mountain Centre, in Libanus on Sunday 24 June from 9:45am to 3:30pm.

Glenn Little, our Physical Activity Development Officer says:

"In terms of popularity, Nordic Walking is one of the fastest growing forms of physical activity in Europe.

"It involves walking with ski-type poles and it has a number of benefits above that of normal walking as it works the upper body as well as the legs.

"Nordic Walking is less tiring than normal walking, and it is a fun way to get healthy, as well as a great social activity to be enjoyed in plenty of fresh air."

Age Cymru's International Nordic Walking instructors are running the Nordic Walking taster session on 24 June.

People attending the session will receive two hours of training in the basics of Nordic Walking technique and be able to take part in a Nordic walk after lunch.

Glenn comments:

"We've designed the Nordic Walking taster sessions on 24 June to be fun and informal - you can also bring along friends or family members for company and to join in.

"All our walks and instructions are graded according to the fitness levels of the people taking part.

"Just wear your normal walking gear and all the specialist equipment you will need will be provided by the Age Cymru Nordic Walking team."

Glenn concludes:

"Booking is essential for this event, so please get in touch to find out more about Nordic Walking and reserve yourself a place for 24 June - we're looking forward to meeting you."

Members of the public who are interested in taking part in the Nordic Walking taster session should contact Age Cymru on 029 2043 1555 and ask to speak to a member of the Nordic Walking Team, or email nordicwalking@agecymru.org.uk

The Age Cymru Nordic Walking taster session on 24 June costs £3.00 per person, or £5.00 for two people.

Individuals who enjoy the day and want to do more Nordic Walking will be able to find out about how to link into classes and walks in their local communities.

Bring a packed lunch with you or you can buy food from the Brecon Beacons National Park Visitor Centre and please note that parking charges will apply at the Brecon Beacons National Park Visitor Centre.

This event is being repeated on Saturday 18 August.
