Paul Thorburn fundraises for Age Cymru

Published on 20 August 2014 01:00 PM

Wales rugby international  and former Neath RFC fullback Paul Thorburn is going to be doing his bit for Age Cymru next month.

Paul made rugby history with the longest successful kick in an international test match - 64.2 metres, playing for Wales against Scotland in 1986.

On September 5, he is teaming up with fellow former Wales internationals Bleddyn Bowen and Mark Titley for a charity golf challenge.

The ‘Country to Coast Golf Challenge' will see them playing at three golf courses across South Wales in 12 hours to raise funds for Age Cymru.

It will take in the Lake Course at the Vale Resort in Hensol, Southerndown Golf Club and the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club - recent host of the 2014 Senior Open.

Says Paul Thorburn:

"I am always interested in undertaking challenges to raise money and the profile of various charities and whilst some of my previous challenges perhaps appear more rigorous and demanding (climbing Kilimanjaro, cycling from Paris to Swansea and kayaking the coast of Wales), I am under no illusion that this will be equally as demanding.

"We anticipate taking 12 hours to complete the challenge and I am naturally delighted to be accompanied by both Bleddyn and Mark.

"We shared some memorable moments together with Wales and I am sure that the ‘team' spirit, plus their golfing capabilities will carry me through the day."

Says Nia Butler, Age Cymru's Individual Fundraising Manager:

"We were absolutely thrilled when Paul Thorburn approached us to say he wanted to get together with some of his friends to fundraise for Age Cymru.

"It's thanks to the support of people like Paul, Bleddyn and Mark that we are able to provide life-changing support and services to older people across the country.

"We know many older people can face difficult times including loneliness, poverty and abuse - they need to know Age Cymru and our local partners are there to help with our services.

"But we can't do this without public support, so please dig deep and support Paul, Bleddyn and Mark and the ‘Country to Coast Golf Challenge' on 5 September."
