Preventative health care

Responding to media reports that an estimated £50 million worth of unused medicines are being returned to pharmacies in Wales every year, Age Cymru's Head of Policy and Public Affairs Graeme Francis says:

"£50 million worth of medicine is a lot to be returned unused, especially at a time when we are all becoming increasingly aware of the impact of cuts to public spending.

"They say that ‘prevention is better than cure' and preventative health care services play a key role in promoting the health and wellbeing of older people.

"As part of this preventative approach, Age Cymru feels it is important that every older person on regular medication is offered medicines reviews on a regular basis to make sure that the medicines they are taking are the right ones for them at that time.

"All older people should have access to information, services and activities to enable them to improve their health and independence. "
