Scams partnership welcomed

Published on 22 September 2014 01:00 PM

Age Cymru has welcomed today's news that Royal Mail and Trading Standards are joining forces to tackle scam mail.

The companies will be improving processes for cancelling the contracts of companies that send fraudulent mail and training postmen and women to report scam mail.

Our Campaigns Coordinator Gerry Keighley says:

"Age Cymru applauds Royal Mail and Trading Standards for joining forces to tackle scam mail.

"Scam mail is a big problem and victims can become entrapped into sending money frequently to scammers in the mistaken belief that they will win huge prizes that simply don't exist.

"Other scammers - such as fake psychics, persuade vulnerable people to send money on the promise of health and happiness, while other hoaxers offer romance or profitable investments."

Age Cymru's ‘Scams and swindles' campaign is calling for more protection for older people from scams, as Gerry Keighley explains:

"Since the launch of our ‘Scams and swindles' campaign we have been calling for victims of scam mail to be identified to Trading Standards and supported.

"Postal deliverers are often aware who is receiving scam mail but their staff have previously been unable to help them.

"Age Cymru feels that if this initiative launched today can help prevent victims and their families from suffering the ravages of scammers it will be a major achievement."
