Responding to the news today that the care provider Southern Cross - which runs 34 homes in Wales, is to shut down, Victoria Lloyd, Age Cymru’s Director of Influencing and Programme Development says:

“Age Cymru is concerned to hear reports that Southern Cross – a company which provides care for over 1,500 older people in Wales, is shutting down its operations.

“This morning’s announcement is another worrying development for Southern Cross residents, their family members and staff.

“At this stage it appears that the vast majority of Southern Cross care homes will continue operations under new ownership, which will provide some reassurance.

”However, Age Cymru is also seeking commitments that continuity of care for residents and their best interests will be the top priority for agencies who are involved in dealing with the fallout from this situation.

“We must also reiterate our position that it the fact the financial problems of a private company can cast a shadow of doubt over the long-term care and housing needs of vulnerable people is a weakness of our current care system and regulations must be strengthened to ensure that inspected care homes can prove that they are financially viable.

“The Welsh Government must continue its discussions with local authorities and health boards in Wales to ensure that appropriate contingency plans are put in place for Southern Cross residents.

“Any older person or those caring for them who would like further information with respect to care homes can call the Age UK Advice freephone advice line on 0800 169 65 65.”
