Summer safety and security tips

Published on 29 July 2015 08:30 AM

We're teaming up with the gas distribution company Wales & West Utilities to offer older people advice on staying safe over the summer months.

Wales & West Utilities is the sponsor of HandyVan - our home safety and security service for older people in Penarth and Cardiff.

Says Sean Overbury, Age Cymru's HandyVan Fitter:

"Summer is the perfect chance to catch up on some jobs like painting the outside of the house, staining the fence and mending window frames, but it's important to be safe.

"Basic things like making sure that we've got a residual current device (RCD) plugged in when we're using the lawnmower and power tools are simple and easy things to do.

"It's also important to make sure that we're locking our doors and windows when we go out and at night, as well as drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day.

"And if you're having a barbeque, make sure you don't use it in an enclosed space and definitely not indoors as it is very dangerous.

"Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous gas - the so-called 'silent killer', which is created when fuels such as charcoal burns."

Home security

• Be sure to lock all outside doors and check that all the windows are locked.
• When you lock up while you're inside, such as at night, keep your keys nearby in a place where you can find them easily.
• Don't leave your windows open at night unless it is safe to do so.

Outdoor safety

• Never use a ladder when you are on your own and lock it away when you've finished using it.
• Always use tools carefully and lock them away where they're out of sight.
• Use an electric socket fitted with a residual current device (RCD) with power tools and electric mowers.
• Prevent accidental poisoning by carefully following the instructions when using weed killers.
• Keep your paths clear of leaves and overgrowing plants and your garden tidy and free of obstacles.
• Always use your barbeque safely and never take it indoors.

Hot weather

• Avoid strenuous activity, and limit activities like housework and gardening to the early morning or evening when it's cooler.
• Drink lots of fluid - even if you aren't thirsty.
