Treasury Select Committee report

Published on 17 November 2011 04:00 PM

Responding to a report by Treasury Select Committee into the future of cheques which calls on the UK Government to use legislation to reinstate the cheque guarantee scheme, Age Cymru's Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Graeme Francis says:

"Age Cymru and our sister charity Age UK have been calling for the reintroduction of the bank guarantee card or some other method to ensure that retailers can have confidence in cheques.

"We agree with the Treasury Select Committee that abandoning the use of guarantee cards could cause cheques as a form of payment to ‘wither on the vine'.

"This report is a strong signal to the UK Government to ensure that banks listen and protect what is an essential method of payment for many older people."
