Age Cymru has welcomed the UK Government's announcement that it is scrapping the default retirement age – that’s the law that allows employers to force people to retire at 65, in October 2011.
Graeme Francis, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at Age Cymru says:
“Common sense has prevailed and Age Cymru is absolutely delighted that the UK Government has set a date for the abolition of the default retirement age.
“The default retirement age is a discriminatory and unfair law and this announcement marks a huge victory for hundreds of thousands of employees who are at risk of being forced out of their jobs because of their age.
“Scrapping the default retirement age will allow older people to pursue available opportunities that enable them to contribute fully to our social and economic life.
“The economy will also benefit from older workers’ precious skills and experience and their increased buying power and public finances will receive a boost from more people paying taxes for longer.”
