Age Cymru President and Vice-Presidents

Age Cymru has appointed a new President and three Vice-Presidents.

The charity's Chief Executive, Robert Taylor says:

“I am very proud to announce that Dame Deirdre Hine has agreed to become Age Cymru’s President, and that Roy Noble, Barbara Wilding and Ann Beynon have accepted our invitations to become our Vice Presidents.

“It will be a privilege to work alongside these highly accomplished and talented individuals to promote the wellbeing of older people in wider society.

“Dame Deirdre Hine, Roy Noble, Barbara Wilding and Ann Beynon will assist Age Cymru to develop relationships with our stakeholders and provide their knowledge and expertise to support our work.

Robert Taylor concludes:

“These honorary appointments are another significant development in the history of Age Cymru since it was created in April 2009 by the coming together of Age Concern Cymru and Help the Aged in Wales.

“Age Cymru is looking foward to working with Dame Deirdre Hine, Roy Noble, Barbara Wilding and Ann Beynon to make a lasting difference to improve the lives and rights of older people.”

Age Cymru’s President and Vice-Presidents:

Dame Deirdre Hine DBE FFPH FRCP - President

Formerly a specialist in community medicine and Chief Medical Officer at the Welsh Office she established the Welsh Breast Cancer Screening Service, Breast Test Wales.

She retired in 1997 was appointed to the Audit Commission in 1998, to the chair of the Commission for Health Improvement in August 1999 and was elected President of the Royal Society of Medicine 2000-2002.

She is a Non-Executive Director of Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Chair of the BUPA Foundation, a Vice-President of Marie Curie Cancer Care and a member of the Science Committee of Cancer Research UK.

She was appointed a Dame Commander of the British Empire for services to medicine in Wales in 1996 and has been awarded numerous degrees and honorary fellowships.

These include honorary fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the Royal College of General Practitioners, and honorary membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

Roy Noble OBE - Vice-President

Roy Noble’s early professional career was in education. In his latter years of teaching he became Head Teacher at schools in Pontneddfechan, and subsequently Crickhowell.

It was at this time that Roy began working part-time for BBC Radio Wales, writing and presenting his 'Letters from Aberdare' which were part of the early morning show on the radio station.

This led to a significant change in career when, in 1985, Radio Wales asked him to present a show full-time on the station, ultimately progressing to presenting 'The Roy Noble Show'.

In 1999 Roy received a Sony Award for his radio programme, and the following year received the Royal Television Society Award for Regional Presenter of the Year. Roy is also well known in the television world for his work in English and Welsh. From 1994 to 2001 he co-presented the Welsh language show 'Heno' in the 7.00pm slot on S4C, along with other programmes such a diet show with Barbara Dickson and a series of 'Noble Guides' on subjects as diverse as manliness and mortality!

Roy is involved with many charities and organisations and in 2001 was awarded an OBE for his charity work. He is an Officer of the Order of St.John and an Honorary Fellow of UWIC (University of Wales Institute Cardiff), a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and a special envoy for the Welsh Tourist Board.

Roy is the current Ambassador for the United Nations International Youth Movement and is involved in very many charities. Roy Noble is a native of Brynaman in the Amman Valley of Carmarthenshire and for the last 30 years has lived in Aberdare.

Barbara Wilding CBE QPM CCMI FRSA - Vice-President

Barbara Wilding’s early police career was with the Jersey States Police and the Metropolitan Police.

She became an Assistant Chief Constable in Kent in 1994. In 1998 she transferred to the Metropolitan Police as Deputy Assistant Commissioner. She also served as Director of Strategic Resources and commanded the Security and Protection Directorate.

Miss Wilding was appointed Chief Constable of South Wales Police in January 2004, and was a Co-Director for the Police National Assessment Centre for Senior Command.

She is an Honorary Doctor of the University of Glamorgan and Honorary Fellow of Cardiff and Swansea Universities, Companion of the Chartered Management Institute and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

She is also a Member of the Royal Institute for International Affairs and Royal College for Defence Studies. Within Wales, she is a Board Member of the Big Lottery, Council Member of the Prince’s Trust Cymru, Advisory Board Member of the BITC and member of the International Advisory Board for Cardiff Business School.

She was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in the Millennium Awards 2000 for distinguished service to policing. Miss Wilding was appointed Commander of the British Empire for her services to policing in the Queen’s 80th Birthday Awards.

Ann Beynon OBE - Vice President 

Ann Beynon OBE is currently BT Director of Wales and is their strategic and development representative for Wales.

Prior to joining BT, Ann was employed as Director of Business Development at the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation. Previously Ann held a number of key roles at S4C, the Welsh Language TV service.

Ann is well-known in the business community and her career background includes a number of senior business development roles including a period as Chair of the Wales Advisory Board for Business in the Community.

In February 1999, she was appointed as a member of the Royal Commission for the reform of the House of Lords. She was the Prince of Wales’s Ambassador in the Community for Wales from 2005-2006 and was awarded an OBE in 2008. She is married to Leighton Andrews AM.

She is currently a Wales Commissioner for the Equality and Human Rights Commission and is a member of the CBI Council for Wales.
