Age Cymru has welcomed plans announced today to open the National Centre for Mental Health in Cardiff, which will receive £3 million Welsh Government funding to research conditions such as Alzheimer’s.
Victoria Lloyd, Age Cymru’s Director of Influencing and Programme Development says:
“Figures from the Alzheimer’s Society reveal that there are 37,000 people with dementia in Wales and we also know that 1 in 3 people aged over 65 in Wales will develop some form of dementia.
“Age Cymru feels the case for further research into the causes of dementia is clear.
“Dementia has been an area that has been severely underfunded over the years and we have long called for a commitment from government to provide more money for research into its causes.
“Age Cymru hopes that today’s funding announcement is a sign that future investment into dementia and its causes will be in proportion to the burden this condition will have on society in years to come.”
