National Nordic Walking Week

Published on 14 April 2011 09:30 AM

Wales' over 50s can get out and make the most of the great outdoors in May thanks to Age Cymru.

The charity’s Nordic Walking programme is inviting members of the public to events in Libanus and Cardiff on 21 and 22 May to have a go at one of Europe’s most popular forms of exercise.

Glenn Little, Age Cymru’s Physical Activity Development Officer says:

“Nordic Walking is great fun, it’s a good social activity and you also get plenty of fresh air.

“It involves walking with ski-type poles and it has a number of benefits above that of normal walking so it is well-suited for people who are aged 50 and over.

“Nordic Walking is also less tiring than normal walking and you actually get more benefit from it than you do from normal walking.

“And this May, Age Cymru’s Nordic Walking Programme is offering people the chance to learn how to Nordic Walk at events in Libanus and Cardiff.”

Age Cymru Wales is running Wales’ first-ever National Nordic Walking Week between May 16 and May 22.

National Nordic Walking Week will feature a series of walks for experienced and first-time Nordic walkers right across Wales.

Says Glenn Little:

“We’ve designed the Nordic Walking sessions we’re running on 21 and 22 May to be fun and informal - you can also bring a friend or a family member along for company.”

“So come along and try your hand at Nordic Walking this May – I guarantee you will enjoy yourself.”

The Nordic Walk on 21 May takes place at the Brecon Beacons National Park National Visitor Centre, also known as ’The Libanus Mountain Centre’ and the Nordic Walk Event taking place on 22 May will meet at Pontcanna Fields in Cardiff.

NOTES FOR EDITORS

The benefits of Nordic Walking:

  • Nordic Walking is a total body exercise suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels;
  • Nordic Walking exercises 90 per cent of your muscles – it uses lots of different muscle groups, and the muscles most involved are obviously those in the legs, but also arms, shoulders, chest and back;
  • Nordic Walking burns 20 per cent more calories than ordinary walking at the same speed – research has shown that on average this increase is 20 per cent, but can be 46 per cent higher, and with Nordic Walking you can burn up to 400 calories per hour compared to 280 per hour;
  • Nordic Walking allows you to exercise more with less effort – it feels less tiring than normal walking and you can feel comfortable, but you’re actually exercising harder and will be able to walk for longer, making it an ideal activity for people who are not able to walk quickly;
