Responding today to calls from the Wales Office for the Treasury to cut the cost of petrol in rural Wales by up to 5p a litre, Graeme Francis, Age Cymru’s Head of Policy and Public Affairs says:
“Transport and mobility are key issues for older people across Wales, particularly in rural areas where public transport may not be as accessible and regular as it is in towns and cities.
“Transport plays a vitally important role in helping people to maintain independence and wellbeing by ensuring that facilities and amenities in their local area are accessible to all older people.
“Many people in rural areas rely on their cars because of the distances they have to travel to access local facilities and they will have borne the brunt of recent increases in the cost of petrol.
“Age Cymru will be following the progress of this proposal from the Wales Office with great interest. “
