Responding to reports in the media that care home provider Southern Cross is experiencing financial difficulties, Age Cymru’s Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Graeme Francis says:

“Age Cymru is concerned to hear reports that Southern Cross – a company which provides care for over 1,500 older people in Wales, is in financial difficulties.

“It is a weakness of our current care system that the financial problems of a private company can cast a shadow of doubt over the long-term care and housing needs of vulnerable people.

“We welcome the news that the Welsh Government is in discussions with local authorities and health boards in Wales to ensure that appropriate contingency plans are put in place for residents.

"We believe that regulation should be strengthened to ensure that inspected care homes can prove that they are financially viable.

"It is vital that this situation is resolved quickly and in the best interests of people who live in Southern Cross care homes.“
