Wales' funniest over 50s

Published on 22 February 2011 08:30 AM

Two Welsh festivals are joining forces to find the country’s funniest over 50s.

The Gwanwyn Festival from Age Cymru and the Cardiff Comedy Festival are offering Wales’ wittiest older comedians a chance to take part in a stand-up workshop.

Side-splitting seniors who shine at the workshop will also perform at a comedy showcase gig in May as part of the Gwanwyn Festival.

Gwanwyn Coordinator Phil Thomas explains:

“Everyone knows an older person who is funny – maybe it’s your husband, your wife, your mother, father, uncle or aunt – it could be your neighbour or someone else in your local community.

“Why not have a chat with them and see if you can get their permission to put their name forward and enter our search for Wales’ funniest over 50?

“You may even fancy yourself as the next Rhod Gilbert or John Bishop - have you really got what it takes to get them rolling in the aisles?

“If so we want to hear from you.

“Contact us today to find out how you can take part in our special over 50s stand-up comedy workshop and gig.”

The Cardiff Comedy Festival is organising the stand-up workshop and comedy showcase for the Gwanwyn Festival.

Scott Fitzgerald from the Cardiff Comedy Festival says:

“The stand-up workshop is being run by a professional comedian who will teach our group the basics of stand-up comedy.

“The funniest performers we find at the workshop will then be invited to take part in our special Gwanwyn Festival comedy showcase.

“There’ll also be a chance for the best stand-ups we find to appear on the bill at the Cardiff Comedy Festival over the summer.

“This is a unique chance for older people to try something different and to learn how to deliver a successful side-splitting, stand-up comedy routine.

“So if you’re a funny over 50 or you know someone who is a funny over 50, get in touch with the Gwanwyn Festival today and find out how to join our workshop.”

If you want to find out about how to get involved with the Gwanwyn Festival’s comedy workshop, please contact the Gwanwyn Festival team on 029 2043 1555.

NOTES TO EDITORS

The Gwanwyn Festival:

Gwanwyn is a month-long national festival held across Wales in May each year celebrating creativity in older age.

The aim of the festival is to:

• Celebrate the opportunity of older age for renewal, growth and creativity, hence the connotations of new-life in the name ‘Gwanwyn’ meaning ‘springtime’ in the Welsh language;

• Promote the benefits of exploring creativity, developing a critical voice and participating fully in the artistic and cultural life of local communities and Wales as a whole;

• Offer opportunities for greater participation by older people in the arts, such as painting, photography, music, drama, storytelling, literature, dance or film during the month of May;

• Highlight existing artistic work and creativity of groups and individuals who are older people themselves or whose work revolves around the concepts of older people and creativity;

• Promote the participation of older people in the arts throughout the year and highlight existing or new opportunities available locally. Gwanwyn is a collaborative initiative between key national organisations lead by Age Cymru, the Arts Council of Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government; working closely with local arts groups, active retirement and community groups, public libraries, museums, schools and care centres;
