The Social Fund and Discretionary Assistance Fund

older happy man

The Social Fund is a UK wide government programme that can help people with one-off expenses they may be struggling to meet on a low income. It includes a number of different elements, including Winter Fuel Payments, Cold Weather Payments, Funeral Payments, Budgeting Loans or Short-term Advances of benefit.

The Discretionary Assistance Fund is a form of local welfare provision, operated by the Welsh Government. It provides Individual Assistance Payments (IAPs) - which enable people to remain living at home independently - and Emergency Assistance Payments (EAPs) which provide help in an emergency or when there is an immediate threat to health or wellbeing.

To find out whether you can receive support through the Social Fund or the Discretionary Assistance Fund, view our factsheet below.
