Elder abuse

Elder abuse

The Age Cymru Elder Abuse Project was established in July 2006 and is being delivered across the whole of Wales.

The project is funded by Comic Relief and has been designed in response to the need to develop advocacy work in Wales as a means of tackling the abuse of older people and to the need to develop policy and practice relating to this very important issue.

The overall aim of the Age Cymru Elder Abuse Project is ‘To reduce the incidence of abuse and deal with it more effectively when it does occur’.

You can contact the Age Cymru Elder Abuse Project by ringing 01352 706228.

Elder abuse conference 7 December 2011 speaker presentations

The Elder abuse conference explored the existing process for safeguarding older people and how we can make the most of the increased law making powers in Wales to more effectively deal with abuse. The day included discussions, presentations and workshops including:

  • an interactive discussion on the need for legislation that safeguards vulnerable adults
  • campaigning for a more robust approach to safeguarding
  • a human rights approach to safeguarding
  • older people and domestic abuse
  • a right to advocacy
  • the role of health in adult protection

The conference provided delegates with the chance to hear the facts and opinions from experts and to discuss and share solutions to achieve better protection. Delegates were able to participate through panel sessions, round table discussions and workshops as well as having opportunities for networking with like minded people; all with the overarching aim to influence legislation, policy and practice to help effect positive change.
