Age Cymru Swansea Bay is proud to be part of the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness.
The number of adults experiencing loneliness within the UK has reached epidemic levels.
Whilst adults of all ages can and do experience loneliness, it is a particular problem amongst older people. Over a million older people say they always or often feel lonely and almost half of older people (4 million) say that the television or pets are their main form of company.
The health impacts of loneliness are serious: research suggests it can be as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes or being morbidly obese. In one study, people with a high degree of loneliness were twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease as people with a low degree of loneliness.
Combating loneliness requires action from across society:
We are the remedy - whether it be talking to a neighbor, visiting an old friend, or just making time for the people you meet, you can help combat the isolation and loneliness that many older people face.

The Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness is a cross-party initiative designed to increase the public’s awareness of loneliness and encourage the public to act to tackle it. Jo Cox was passionate about the issue of loneliness and started the Commission before her murder in June 2016. The Commission will now be taken forward by Rachel Reeves MP (Labour) and Seema Kennedy MP (Conservative) in her memory.
Throughout 2017 the Commission will focus, one month at a time, on different groups affected by loneliness including older people, carers, men, those with disabilities, new parents, children and refugees.
