When we launched the Still Hungry to be Heard report earlier this year, we called upon all staff on hospital wards, the Government and the Care Quality Commission to take action to end malnutrition in our hospitals.
The Government responded to our calls saying 'All patients should be individually assessed when admitted to hospital, and they should be provided with nutritious, properly prepared food at times that are appropriate to their individual needs.'
NHS Confederation, a group representing NHS managers, also responded to the campaign, saying 'Considerable progress has been made in ensuring that patients are fed properly in NHS hospitals, although more can always be done and improvement should be ongoing. A large part of addressing the issue is making sure that all providers of care have systems in place that enable them to recognise those at risk on admission.'
A spokesperson from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) said, 'Age UK is right to raise this issue. Proper nutrition and monitoring patients' weight is absolutely fundamental to good healthcare, particularly for elderly patients.' In relation to our call for a national review on this issue, CQC also said that it consults each year on the reviews it will carry out and that it would consider all suggestions for reviews.
