Isolation is a huge problem for many people in later life. Over 5 million older people consider television as their main form of company.
To help overcome this situation, Age UK set up the Call in Time friendship and wellbeing service.
The idea behind Call in Time is that corporate volunteers call a designated person on a regular basis, usually once a week. This may be the only phone call the person receives that week.
Age UK matches the corporate volunteer and older person and provides training and support throughout the process so the volunteer never feels like they are alone.
Our first corporate supporters were Zurich Community Trust, and they have since been joined by Prudential. Call in Time was nominated as best Charity Partnership in the 2009 Third Sector Excellence Awards and shortlisted for the Corporate National Partnership of the Year in the 2010 Charity Times Awards.
Evaluations conducted of Call in Time have shown just how important this phone call is to isolated people in later life. The report stated that:
As one beneficiary said: ‘You can’t put it into words. It’s just knowing that there’s somebody there, especially when you live on your own. It’s just priceless.’
In addition to offering your company a very easy way to make a significant impact on the lives of older people, Call in Time:
We are also delighted to welcome Wilkinsons and Bloomberg to Call in Time. With their support we will reach even more isolated people in later life.
The programme is growing fast so we are looking for new corporate supporters to join Call in Time.
Please note: Call in Time is a corporate volunteer programme only, and we can't accept members of the public as volunteers.
