How you have helped

Your fundraising has made a huge difference to the lives of disadvantaged older people.

Over 1 million older people in the UK always or often feel lonely, with Christmas being an especially tough time for many.

Last Christmas, individual fundraisers raised over £34,000 for Age UK - enough to pay for 340 HandyVan visits and bring a welcome friendly face to an older person's home.

HandyVan fitters install security equipment, change locks and fit smoke alarms to help older people feel safer in their homes.

  • £1 gives an older person a spyhole so they can check who’s at the door before opening it.
  • £10 provides a smoke alarm, which could save an older person’s life.
  • £20 contributes to the cost of a door alert button which an older person can press to talk to someone and get advice about answering their door to someone they don’t know.

Helping Maude sleep at night

76-year old Maude, terrified after being burgled by a thief who climbed in through her bedroom window, had begun sleeping downstairs.

A HandyVan fitter installed a spy hole and secure locks on all Maude's windows and doors. With tears running down her face, Maude thanked him, saying: 'I’m going to sleep in my own bed tonight for the first time in three years.'
