Thanks to the help of our supporters our raffles have raised over £1 million in the past year, which has helped to support people like Mary.
Mary is disabled and housebound. She felt very isolated and unbearably lonely; in fact she was in despair when she telephoned Age UK Advice.
We were able to refer her to a local group which runs a day centre with a transport service. We also directed her to Age UK’s ‘Call in Time’ telephone befriending service and she now receives a 20 minute call every day. Her daily call makes all the difference to her life now and she says it is ‘literally a marvellous service’.
By contrast, our HandyVan service offers free critical practical support to older people, as the following quote illustrates:
'On Christmas eve my husband and I were in the living room watching TV when the carbon monoxide detector that you fitted only about 7 weeks before went off. We learned from the gas board that our old gas fire had split, and instead of the fumes going up the chimney, they were being released into our room.
'We cannot say how grateful we are that the young man who fitted the meter went through the procedure with us, so patiently, and emphasized to leave the house should the meter ever go off. If it wasn’t for the meter being fitted…the story could have been quite different.'

‘I usually play the raffle and sell all the tickets I am sent but this is the first time that I struggled to sell all my tickets because I was snowed in at Christmas so I am incredibly shocked and delighted to win! I will be using some of the money on a trip to Canada to see my brother-in-law’.
