FAQs

Here we answer the most frequently asked questions about volunteering for Age UK.

Am I too old?

No. Age is no barrier. We all have something to offer no matter what our age.

How much time do I need to volunteer for?

The amount of time needed is different for each role, and also depends on how much time you have to give.

Can I be paid to cover my expenses?

We recommend that all reasonable expenses that arise from volunteering‚ such as travel and lunch, are reimbursed.

Can I claim benefits while volunteering?

Yes. Volunteering does not affect your benefits‚ although you may have to let the Job Centre staff know.

I’m working full-time, can I still volunteer?

Yes. There are a range of activities that are suitable outside of normal working hours such as befriending‚ home visiting‚ being a driver or acting as a trustee.

Do I need any skills or qualifications?

Most volunteer roles don’t require special skills or qualifications and you will be given any training you need. Some roles require certain skills but this will be stated clearly in the role description.

Can I get a qualification?

Occasionally we can help volunteers obtain qualifications such as an NVQ. If this is your goal, please mention this when you apply. Even if you can’t get a qualification volunteering will make you more employable as you gain valuable experience‚ skills and a reference.

Can I volunteer with my family or friends?

There may be an opportunity for this but you won’t have such a large choice of activities.

Will I be interviewed?

Most volunteering opportunities will just entail an informal chat so you can find out more about us and the opportunity you are interested in.

Roles which require more responsibility‚ such as being a trustee‚ will involve a more formal interview.

The questions will vary, but typically you may be asked:

  • Why do you want to volunteer with Age UK?
  • What sort of role are you interested in?
  • How much time can you offer?
  • Do you have any particular skills you can offer?
  • What new skills would you like to learn through volunteering?

In turn you can ask any questions, and you may have the chance to look at where you will be volunteering and meet some of the other staff and volunteers.

What support will I get?

We will make sure that you have what you need to perform your role‚ you have your expenses reimbursed‚ you are insured, and you know who to go to if you have a question or a problem.

Can I leave if I don’t like it?

Yes‚ of course you can. If you are unhappy‚ it is always worth talking to your supervisor beforehand to see if there is anything they can do to improve your experience, such as changing your role to something you find more enjoyable.

I want to be a social worker, how can I get experience?

Volunteering with Age UK can be an excellent way of gaining experience in social work or working with vulnerable people. Contact your local Age UK partner to see if they are able to offer you something suitable. Call 0800 169 6565 to find your nearest one.
