Alec Fets - North East

preparing and cooking food

Alec was never really interested in cooking. He would occasionally prepare a simple dish but his wife cooked most of their family meals.

When Alec retired‚ after a career as a charge hand fitter for the local authority‚ his wife saw an advertisement for the fit as a fiddle Cook & Eat course and encouraged him to attend to get some new ideas for meals.

The six-week course introduced Alec to a range of basic cooking skills and gave him tips for preparing traditional meals in a healthy way. Alec really enjoyed the course and said that he should have done one years ago!

His family are reaping the benefits. Alec regularly makes soup‚ which the family didn’t eat much of before - his favourites are roast sweet potato and paprika soup and lentil and bacon soup. His mince and dumpling recipe has also gone down a storm‚ and his date and walnut scones are a hit with his mother-in-law.

Alec says‚ “It was a brilliant experience that changed my life. I am now baking and cooking things I would never have attempted before going on the course. I have met new people and now appreciate the effort taken to make a good healthy meal.”
