Dancing for fun participant - Maureen

Maureen has attended the Sutton class since March 2009. 'I joined the dance class at the very first session, held at the Glebe. The atmosphere was welcoming and friendly and, although I was without a partner, I enjoyed participating.

'I live in Mepal and drive my own vehicle to the class. The venue appealed to me as it's close to home and was a major factor in my decision to join the class. I felt it would be a good way to meet new people and get some exercise.

'I wasn't at all nervous when attending the first class. My only reservation was that there would be mainly couples (which proved to be the case) but there were two gentlemen without partners; I got to dance, so it was fine.

'I always enjoyed dancing and danced in my youth, but hadn't done much for quite a few years. Dancing was a popular recreation in those days!'

The class

'Since those early days our numbers have grown and everyone mixes well. The new location is also a bonus, with the extra space. All those attending class were new to me. I have also met a few members outside the class on a couple of occasions.

'Maureen is a great teacher. She is helpful and humorous, and makes learning a fun adventure without any pressure. I find the class a really enjoyable social event - and a very good workout! I have certain health issues, so do not belong to a gym or engage in any rigorous exercise regime, so the dancing is just perfect for me. I enjoy the social aspect of the class and feel the physical benefit of the exercise.'

Volunteering

'Volunteers are always valuable in any social environment and I'm happy to help in most capacities. Along with other members, when the need arises, I sometimes help in the kitchen preparing tea and coffee - always a welcome break - especially in the summer months. It's all part of an enjoyable social afternoon.'

How to develop and sustain

'As always, it would be beneficial to the class if a few more gentlemen could be persuaded to join - but I'm at a loss to suggest how this could be achieved. Perhaps, somehow, they could be persuaded to turn off the TV, bypass the pub and sidestep into the ballroom. We ladies don't bite and they may actually have some fun into the bargain!

'Fundraising is a tough subject. Most pensioners have restricted income and family commitments that may deter members from volunteering time and funds to organise fundraising events, such as inviting local bands or musicians to play for us at special dances to raise funds - members could bring along a prize to be raffled.

'It's a fun part of my week and, doubtless, it’s the same for all of the members. Long may it continue!'
