Age needs one voice. Now it has:
Age UK is the new force combining Age Concern England and
Help the Aged in England.
The new force combining &
fit as a fiddle has supported eight sessions of New Age Kurling. New Age Kurling is a form of the original game played on ice that has been adapted so that it can be played on any smooth‚ flat surface. The game is played using stones on weighted ball bearings and two teams take it in turns to slide the stones towards a target. The kit is easy to transport and set up‚ and pushers and ramps can be used to make it easier.
New Age Kurling has been used as part of rehabilitation programmes in hospitals because the sport doesn’t require any physical fitness to play‚ but it exercises muscles you would not usually use. New Age Kurling falls into all of the government guidelines for exercise and there is also a strong social element to the game‚ as players work in teams and have a chat with each other while waiting for their turn.
In addition to New Age Kurling‚ the club has also played New Age Bowls using high density‚ tactile‚ plastic bowls that perform like normal bowls‚ but it’s played indoors and suitable for all ages and abilities. The club’s chair helped organise the participants into teams and each week they would play matches of Kurling and Bowls against one another.
This project aimed to provide the club with a new activity where the participants could enjoy getting out of their chairs‚ getting some exercise‚ and doing something new. It aimed to give participants a fitter‚ happier and more relaxed lifestyle‚ while offering opportunity for them to make new friends in their local community.
