How the HandyVan service works

When you call us, we'll talk to you about your circumstances and whether you are eligible to receive the service.

We'll also talk to you about any other needs you have, give you information, and discuss the work you would like the HandyVan fitter to do. We can then book a morning or afternoon appointment for you depending on what's convenient to you.

We will book an appointment for you as soon we can. We will prioritise people who have urgent needs and where they are deemed unsafe in their homes.

We can provide some materials free of charge, such as door chains/security chains, but if there's something specific you would like us to fit, e.g. a new toilet seat or curtain rail you have bought, we can also do this. If you're unable to get out to purchase the items that you would like fitted, please let us know and we may be able to purchase these on your behalf.

We will take into consideration any of your cultural needs or special considerations about getting the work done.

When the fitter comes to see you, they will wear an Age UK uniform, drive an Age UK-branded vehicle and will show you their identity before you invite them in.

We'll discuss your requirements and assess whether we can help you. Then you can decide whether you wish to go ahead with the work. After the work has been completed, the fitter will explain the products that have been installed and give you any instructions.
