Age UK Isle of Wight and the British Red Cross are working together to reduce falls, keep people safe and independent in their own home and help to increase their confidence.
Are you worried about falling or feel unsteady on your feet?
Having a fall can have a devastating effect on someone’s life, with falls and fractures in people over 65 on the Isle of Wight accounting for up to 4,000 emergency calls each year to ambulance and care services.
After a fall: as we get older the risk of falls increase – with most taking place in the home. Falls destroy confidence, increase isolation and reduce independence with around 1 in 10 older people who fall becoming afraid to leave their homes in case they fall again.
Falls also have a massive impact on families, friends and carers who offer support. People often accept this as part of the ageing process but this is not the case.
The good news is that there are some simple changes we can make to prevent falls, which can help you increase confidence, feel safe and remain independent in your own home.
Our FREE Falls Prevention Service can support you:
- By completing a 1:1 assessment in your own home and arranging for simple adaptations such as hand rails to be fitted
- Refer you to other services to improve mobility such as Nailcutting, Mobility Aids and Handyperson services.
- Provide access to gentle exercise designed to improve strength and balance to prevent falls and increase ability to get up should you fall.
- Offer Walking Stick MOT’s – simply changing the rubber end of a walking stick can improve balance and increase your confidence.
