You may well ask what exactly do Community Development Workers do?
First and foremost our job is to improve the lives of older people in Lambeth.  This happens in different ways by using our experience and knowledge Lambeth and developing new and existing relationships with professional. Work includes:
Supporting project leaders to apply for funding
We research current information on funding trusts and then match the criteria with the needs of the particular projects.  For example identifying where a sheltered housing scheme or a Tenants and Residents Association to apply for funding to support  the costs of a tutor for an exercise class.  Work includes writing and advising on funding applications and helping projects to think through the content of an application.
Engaging with organisations and project leaders to promote peer support
We provide advice and ideas for example to project leaders who may be looking to open a community centre for a particular peer group who may not speak English as a first language.  Issues such as client group, location, good management and publicity will all be part of the process to enable communities to support each other in a positive way.  Casework can also include helping a project to identify relevant training for their trustees.
Working proactively with projects to aspire to high quality promotion of their services
Work can range from advising a small Over 50s group in the middle of an estate on the production of a simple flyer to increase their membership, to supporting a well-established group to get their publicity our quickly and effectively via social media and other methods
Working as part of a planning group to host the Age UK Lambeth Celebrating Age Festival
Each year from January to October we work towards the build-up of the festival in October.  This includes: Identifying activities and formulising a full month programme, applying for funding, identifying community and business sponsors and producing a brochure.
Working in partnership with medical, health and Social Care professionals
Age UK Lambeth has established a strong relationship with the Lambeth Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG),  Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, and the Councils Adult Social Care Department.  We sit on each of the 3 Local Care Networks and act as advisor for non- medical issues  affecting the client base. We also attend professional management teams to support colleagues to help the care process run smoothly and develop working relationships on an ongoing basis.
Production of monthly Community Listing
In partnership with a range of projects and organisations we collate a monthly electronic newsletter of events in Lambeth.  Currently there are XXXXX organisations on the mailing list

What do Community Development Workers do?

Our role is to collaborate with other organisations in Lambeth to generate benefits for older people through strengthening the community assets available to them. We want people to be able to get the help they want or take part in things that interest them as easily as possible so we work to ensure that the number of opportunities available are always increasing. This allows people to help themselves and remain independent, maintaining their quality of life while reducing pressure on key services. We do this by developing events and projects with the voluntary sector in the borough and also through producing our own, such as the annual Celebrating Age Festival every October.

How can we help?

If you run a community group in Lambeth, or are considering setting one up, we can support you in a number of ways. It might be that you would like to register as a charity but are unsure of the process or what documentation to provide; or have an idea for a particular activity group or service but have questions about the best way of setting it up: we are here to advise. Maybe you have big plans but lack the financial resources to develop them: we keep up to date records of different funding bodies and their application criteria, so if you are looking to apply for financial support we can match you up with the sources that suit your aims best and then help with your application. With our knowledge of facilities across the borough, we can also help you find the right venue for your group, put you in touch with other community organisations for mutually beneficial relationships, or help publicise your work through our social media and our mailing list of almost 500 groups and individuals throughout Lambeth.
