Britons welcome move to digital TV

Converting to digital television has helped 31% of over-65s feel more technology-savvy in areas where analogue TV has been switched off, according to research.

Among all ages, 26% said they felt more confident with technology, the opens link in new window Digital UK study revealed.

The majority of late converters to digital TV (64%) said they now want to try other gadgets, from the latest TV recorders to surfing the internet.

Some 78% said they were confident about making the switch to digital TV, while 90% thought that digital TV was better or as good as analogue. A third of those questioned said they wished they had made the switch sooner.

Most people (53%) said the main benefit of digital TV is having extra channels, with other benefits including improved reception, with 60% saying that they have noticed this. Meanwhile nearly one in three (30%) said that they were enjoying improved picture and sound quality.

David Scott, chief executive of Digital UK, said: "It's still early days for TV switchover but there is clear evidence that the benefits of digital TV are welcomed by the vast majority of those who have upgraded, most of whom have found it a straightforward process."
