The over 50s are daring to bare a bit more flesh thanks to more mature screen idols and advances in swimwear technology.

Debenhams has seen sales of 'grankinis' soar by 118% as older women in their 50s and 60s ditch their traditional one-piece for a more daring alternative, spurred on by celebs such as 65-year-old Dame Helen Mirren.

Some 71% of customers aged between 50 and 65 polled by the retailer said they had chosen a bikini over a one-piece in the past few years.

With more bikinis on the market with wider straps, gauge wires and built-mesh to provide support and shape, as well as bottoms with higher waistlines, older women are feeling more confident about ditching the traditional one-piece.

Sasha Nagalingham, the store's swimwear buyer, said: 'A full costume on an older lady instantly says "granny"; but a supportive, well-proportioned bikini is less ageing and accentuates rather than hides natural shape.'
