The latest figures on new internet users in the UK have shown that people aged 50 or over made up the largest social group to join last year.
According to the UK Online Measurement Company, the overall UK internet audience grew from 36.9 million in May 2009 to 38.8 million for the same month this year.
Of those that joined, one million (53%) were at least 50 years old. That group was made up of 722,000 men, and 284,000 women.
The next largest social group to come online over the course of the 12-month period was women in the 21-34 age bracket. They accounted for 272,000 new users, the figures showed.
Alex Burmaster, of the UK Online Measurement Company, said the fact that more older users are using the internet shows it is a "form of media utilised by all age groups".
He said: "The fact that one in four Britons who use the Internet today are 50 to 64 years old proves it is no longer the sole preserve of the young and technical literati."
