Age UK's response State Pension age review

Published on 01 March 2016 02:30 PM

Responding to the DWP's Written Statement this morning on the State Pension age review, Caroline Abrahams, Age UK's Charity Director, said:

'We look forward to contributing to the State Pension age review. The State Pension is still the largest single source of income for most people in later life so ensuring its sustainability is vital. However as we live in a country where healthy life expectancy varies so much and there are widening inequalities between deprived and affluent areas, it is essential that further increases to the state pension age should not be based on life expectancy alone.

'When reviewing the State Pension age we would ask John Cridland to take into consideration health and employment opportunities, as well as giving people plenty of notice ahead of any change to their State Pension age to avoid any surprises when it comes to retirement. We know that many women were unaware of previous changes and now face sharp rises in their State Pension age with little time to change their plans.'
