Following the merger of Age Concern NI and Help the Aged NI in 2009 to establish our new charity Age NI, we are delighted to present this summary of Age NI’s Strategic Plan 2011-16.

Age NI is working to improve later life for 350,000 older people in Northern Ireland today and for future generations. We celebrate ageing, we create opportunities for people in later life and we challenge disadvantage and discrimination experienced by our ageing population. Our aim is to set the agenda for later life and play a key influencing role in changing NI society’s approach to older people.

During 2010, Age NI engaged in a wide ranging consultation with individual older people, age sector representatives, statutory bodies and partners to ensure that our work meets the needs of older people in Northern Ireland.

We would like to thank the thousands of individuals and organisations who took the time to participate and respond. This strategic plan consolidates your feedback with our 60 years of experience working locally in the NI ageing arena; nationally with our sister charities (Age Cymru, Age Scotland and Age UK), as well as in an international and global context.

In summary, you have told us clearly that:

Current barriers to ageing well (poverty; isolation; poor access to care and support) require radical action and change.
Older people across Northern Ireland demand to be valued for the huge contribution they make to all aspects of our society.
The negative perceptions and discrimination which many older people face is totally unacceptable.

Your feedback has reaffirmed our focus on campaigning and lobbying to reduce poverty, improve health and social care, address discrimination and ageist practice. It also confirmed how important it is that we continue to provide products and services to support independence, continue to work with older people’s groups and other organisations at the frontline to support isolated older people living in local communities.

This booklet outlines the work of Age NI across our seven strategic priority areas to show how we are working to improve and enhance the lives of older people here in Northern Ireland.
