The Advantage Level 5 Award in Providing Advice to Older People is Northern Ireland's first and only level 5 qualification on age issues.

This award is made up of the unit 'Providing Specialist Advice to Older People on their Rights under the Law'. It is a knowledge based unit worth 5 credits at Level 5 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework.

While the award is a qualification in its own right, it can be used as a unit towards a Level 4 Certification or Level 4 Diploma in Providing Specialist Legal Advice, for those wishing to progress.

What the course covers

The course has six learning outcomes:

  • Understand the legislative framework (in your country) relating to discrimination for goods, facilities, products and services on the grounds of age
  • Understand the legislative framework (in your country) relating to pensions and welfare benefits for older people
  • Understand the rights of older people in relation to the provision of health and community care (in your country)
  • Understand the rights of older people to be protected from abuse
  • Understand the rights and entitlements of older people in relation to the provision and maintenance of accommodation
  • Understand the key aspects of employment law as it affects older people

The content of the course is mapped to the Advice NI’s Advantage training programme. Learners who have previously completed Advantage training can use their work to receive Recognition of Prior Learning towards this award and where applicable build up modules to the full award.

Accreditation

The Level 5 Award is accredited by ProQual. Successful completion of this course and the required assessment exercises are worth 5 Credits at Level 5 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework .There are no entry requirements for the award.

Who should attend

This course is aimed at those who work in an advisory capacity with older people, groups who are working on age sector issues, and those working within the subject area, such as Case Workers, Housing Officers, Community Care Workers, EHO’s, Advocates and Legal Advisers.

Professional Framework:

The educational framework of this award including its status on the QCF is explained in the section ‘About the Award’. This course can be used as evidence towards a range of units in our Advice and Guidance NVQ’s at Level 3 Certificate and Level 4 Diploma including Understand the Importance of Legislation and Procedures (Unit 30) and Establish Communications with Clients (Unit 1). It also links to a range of other National Occupational Standards for Legal Advisers including:

  • IB4/IB5 – First Line Discrimination Legal Advice/Casework
  • IB15/IB16 – First Line Employment Legal Advice/Casework
  • IB19/IB20 – First Line Welfare Rights and Legal Advice/Casework
  • IB21/IB22 – First Line Health and Community Care Legal Advice/Casework
  • IB7/IB8 – First Line Mental Health Legal Advice/Casework
  • IB9/IB10 – First Line Housing Legal Advice/Casework

Location/Time

The course will be delivered at Advice NI’s office in Belfast and will run from
9:30am to 4:30pm (approximately). It is broken up into 6 topic areas based on
Advice NI Advantage courses and delivered over 12 days on the following dates:

Age Awareness and Working with Older People: 5 and 12 Sep
Introduction to Older People’s Benefits: 19 and 26 Sep
Understanding State Pensions: 3 and 10 Oct
Health Rights and Services for Older People: 17 and 24 Oct
Community Care and Older People: 7 and 14 Nov
Housing and Older People: 21 and 28 Nov
