4. Get ready for January

Plan your activity and get sharing on social media, to tell family and friends about your challenge.

You will be helping people like Jean, who is supported by Age NI’s Check in and Chat service.

Jean was married for 53 years, has one adult daughter when her husband died suddenly in 2019.

When her husband died, she was so shocked and very lonely and did not leave her home for a year. Her husband was the driver and took her everywhere, so Jean felt incredibly isolated and alone, living especially in quite a remote area.

Jean was supported and referred to Check in and Chat, where she now speaks to Rhonda every Monday night. She says: ‘I look forward to it, it has made such a difference to my life, Rhonda is so knowledgeable and talks about any subject, we have really interesting conversations’.

Jean went on to say, ‘This has made such a difference to my life, Rhonda couldn’t be any nicer.’

Jean now gets out and about more, using public transport to visit relatives, attending a luncheon every two weeks at a church in the nearest town, and the community transport network takes her shopping every week to get her groceries.

‘I have great neighbours around me, I know I am not alone, but it’s such a different life than before, I am glad to have Rhonda and the phone call from her once a week, it really helps’.

Check in and Chat supports 319 lonely and isolated older people on a weekly basis, your support will mean we can reach even more people when they need us most.
