Shelley Logue

Shelley Logue tells us why she loves her job as Care Manager at Meadowbank Residential Home.

How are you involved in dementia care?

For the past 6 months I have been Acting Care Manager at Meadowbank residential home, Age NI’s purpose built dementia unit. I lead a highly skilled, compassionate, professional team who provide 24 hour specialist care for people with various types of dementia and at varying stages in their journey. We advocate empowering approaches to enable individuals to maintain their identity, rights and encourage a sense of community.

What are the main challenges people face when diagnosed with dementia?

One of the biggest challenges facing a person diagnosed with dementia is to have good quality of life and their rights, choices, independence and privacy protected. At Meadowbank people are supported to do this in an appropriate, safe environment by specialist professionals.

How does your role at Age NI support people and their carers to live well with dementia?

I support residents living in Meadowbank to maintain their identity and become part of a community, where their voices are heard and their opinions are valued. I provide leadership to a dedicated team who deliver quality person-centred and relationship-centred care which enables residents and their families to engage in the care we deliver and the community we provide. By developing and maintaining strong, open relationships with residents and their families, we ensure that active listening, assistance and advice is available to those in need.

What do you love about your job?

I love that we have so many different and special characters living with us in Meadowbank; I embrace their individuality and thank them for giving me the opportunity to share in their lives. No two days are the same in Meadowbank and I enjoy the variety that brings and with it the opportunity to learn new things. The chance to work within a skilled team, providing quality care and enhancing lives of people with dementia and their families is something I am honoured to be part of.
