Age NI Enterprises in partnership with the Ulster Farmer’s Union, is urging people to look out for their older friends, neighbours and family during the current adverse weather conditions.

Ron Warwick, General Manager at Age NI Enterprises commented, 'Extreme weather conditions can have a significant impact on older people, particularly in more isolated rural areas.

'We would urge family, friends and relatives to look in on people they know to make sure they have everything they need. The thought of a trip or a fall can make people afraid to venture out of the house.

'Even getting to the shops to make sure that there’s enough food in the house can be difficult.  But, we can all do something to help. A small gesture like clearing a neighbour’s drive if it's frosty or snow is lying, or picking up some extra groceries when you’re at the shop can make a huge difference.

'At Age NI Enterprises, we also know that everyone needs a helping hand at times.  Support from friends, families or neighbours, along with gadgets designed for the home, are there to help.   An Age NI Personal Alarm is one such gadget that provides older people and their loved ones with the peace of mind that help can be accessed at the touch of a button, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.'

Harry Sinclair, President of the Ulster Farmer’s Union added, 'Difficult weather conditions can be a huge source of worry to older people, particularly within rural communities. People can often feel more isolated and struggle to access the services they need.

'It’s important to ensure that people in later life are to remain warm, well and connected independent which is why the Ulster Farmer’s Union supports Age NI Enterprises’ call for family, friends and neighbours to help where they can.'
